Demolition for former Yorkshire Post building

THE former Yorkshire Post building in Leeds is to be demolished.

Publishing group Johnston Press has submitted a demolition order to Leeds City Council and a decision is expected to be made next month.

The offices on Wellington Street were the home of the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post for 42 years.

Johnston Press announced last year it was to move the two newspapers from the building – known for its concrete shell and iconic clock – to modern office block No 1 Leeds as it looked to save costs.

A report to the council said the demolition was “a necessary first stage in preparing the site for redevelopment”.

It said while the building was of some local interest, “the wider architectural and historic interest is limited”.

It was announced earlier this year that English Heritage said the building would not be listed.
