Charity: Nexus flies past Yorkshire Air Ambulance fundraising target; Lawyers’ dinner raises £2,000; and more

LEEDS-based Nexus Vehicle Rental, the corporate vehicle rental provider, has raised £12,075 for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, smashing the fundraising target it set itself last year.
Nexus employees took part in a series of fundraising challenges including a 160-mile roundtrip bike ride from Harrogate to Scarborough and two gruelling expeditions into the Yorkshire Dales to complete the Three Peaks challenge,Bake sales, raffles and other internal initiatives helped to make up the total.
The partnership with The Yorkshire Air Ambulance took flight in June 2015 with Nexus setting out its commitment to raise £12,000 for the charity, the amount needed to keep the service operational each day.
David Brennan, CEO at Nexus Vehicle Rental said: “We are incredibly proud of our team’s fundraising efforts and although we have taken part in some very tough challenges we have also had a lot of fun along the way.
“As a Yorkshire-based business, it’s a pleasure to be able to support The Yorkshire Air Ambulance which provides such a crucial and life-saving service in our region, and is a charity close to the hearts of so many of our staff, customers and partners.”

A SOUTH Yorkshire Resolution dinner has raised more than £1,793 for Doncaster Rape and Sex Abuse Counselling Service, which supports children and adult victims of sexual and domestic violence.
Attendees included Resolution’s national chair, Nigel Shepherd, together with an array of judges, barristers, QCs and family solicitors from across Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Leeds and London.
The South Yorkshire group of Resolution, a member-based organisation of family lawyers and other professionals in England and Wales who are committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes, was founded 30 years ago.
Vanessa Fox, chair of South Yorkshire Resolution and head of family law at hlw Keeble Hawson, said: “The fundraiser was a vital feature of the evening, which followed our annual general meeting. As an organisation that is fundamentally involved in major social issues, such as the consequences of the removal of Legal Aid for most family law and divorce matters, we used this event to try and support the help which this charity provides to society’s most vulnerable. We thank everyone who contributed on the night and those who provided prizes for the auction and raffle.”

BRADFORD- based recruitment company Driver Hire, a supplier of staff to the road transport and logistics industry has once again supported Road Safety Week.
Organised by road safety charity Brake, this year’s campaign between November 21 and 27 encourages drivers to follow six road safety pledges – stick to speed limits, stay sober, use seat belts, avoid distractions, take regular eye tests, and consider other forms of transport for short journeys.
“The good news is that UK roads are amongst the safest in Europe,” says Justine Turner, Driver Hire’s road safety co-ordinator. “With 28 fatalities per 1m population, that’s half the average figure for EU countries – the third lowest death rate, beaten only by Malta and Sweden.
“The not so good news is that, according to figures from the Department for Transport (DfT) for the year to March 2016, road fatalities in the UK actually increased by 1.9% compared to 2015. A total of 1,780 people were killed, that’s five deaths every day of the year.
“The six pledges are simple but excellent road safety advice,” Ms Turner added. “By sticking to these rules and always treating driving as a task in itself, rather than trying to multi-task whilst at the wheel, we’ll all be doing our bit to make our roads even safer.”

STUDENTS at Barnsley College marked World Prematurity Day by handing over a cheque for £650 to Barnsley Hospital’s Tiny Hearts Appeal.
Students and staff from the college’s Childcare and Education Professions department raised the money by hosting a black tie and ballgown charity ball at the Holiday Inn in Barnsley.
The department chose to support the Tiny Hearts Appeal as tutor Emma McDonald-Brown’s four-year-old son was cared for by the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the hospital when he was born prematurely at 31 weeks.
McDonald-Brown is the national co-ordinator for Little Miracles UK, a charity supporting the families of premature and sick babies.
She said: “Sherratt wouldn’t be here without the care and monitoring I received during my pregnancy up until delivery and the medical attention he received during labour and after delivery.
“This money is valuable as the SCBU is trying to purchase new, state-of- the-art equipment to provide an even better standard of care for the special care babies and the most comfortable environment possible for families and staff.”
