Horbury builds with college contract

A SOUTH Yorkshire-based construction specialist will play a vital role in an innovative £22m re-build programme for a Lancashire school. 

Horbury Building Systems, one of the largest drywall contractors in the UK, has been appointed by Bovis Lend Lease in an £800,000 contract to carry out installation of steel frame systems (SFS) and partitions for the Blessed Trinity RC College development in Burnley.

The project, part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme, will see the Rotherham-based specialists working on phase three of Lancashire’s BSF programme, which involves the school being partially demolished then re-built and extended.

Trevor Wragg, managing director of the Horbury Group, said: “The Horbury Group has a wealth of experience and a solid track record of completing public sector developments. The Blessed Trinity extension is another major project and we are absolutely delighted to be involved.

“It is testament to our expertise and first-class delivery that we continue to win contracts like this on a national level.”

The building has been designed to minimise energy consumption and its carbon footprint through the use of biomass boilers, photovoltaic glazing, solar collection panels and rainwater harvesting.

A wind turbine will also be erected between the existing all-weather pitch and running track to generate electricity.

The re-build, which has been designed by Ellis Williams Architects, forms part of the final phase of Lancashire’s £250m BSF programme and is expected to take eight months, with completion anticipated by March 2010.

Funded by the Department for Education and Skills, BSF is the country’s biggest-ever school buildings investment programme.

Blessed Trinity RC College, which opened in September 2006 as part of the first wave of the nationwide BSF programme, is a mixed 11 to 16 comprehensive school which has specialist status as a Humanities and Sports College.
