My Favourite Building

TIM Morgan is a director at Wakefield-based property investment company Emerging Real Estate.

“I have always admired The Old Post Office, the architecture is magnificent. I’ve often thought that I would love to own this building.

“City Square is now a vibrant area due to the new restaurants and bars. Both theTim Morgan of Emerging Real Estate in Wakefield building and square are the first thing you see as you step out of the train station – and what an exceptional first impression to have of the city.

“The grade two-listed building was built in 1896 at a cost of £75,000 on the site of the Coloured Cloth hall. It was designed by Henry Tanner, the government’s chief architect of works.

“Designed by Tanner in a Renaissance style, building work began in February in 1892 and was completed in April 1896 under his supervision. Work was perhaps slower than it could be as the builders were required to work with deliberation in order to meet the exact specifications.

“It was built specifically as a post office, following the demolition of the previous postal service building on Park Row in 1897.

“The building served a dual purpose as the city’s main post office and its first telephone exchange. After an £8m refurbishment in 2006, the building is now home to private luxury apartments and restaurants Loch Fyne and Restaurant Bar & Grill.”
