Skills gap targeted through investment in digital infrastructure

University Centre Leeds, a member of Luminate Education Group, has launched a digital innovation hub to bridge the skills gaps in the region.

The £50,000 facility, funded by the Office for Students (OfS),  includes podcast, video and virtual reality equipment to enhance students’ capabilities and staff practices.

It will allow students to experiment with emerging technologies and gain hands-on experience in areas which are highly valued by employers in the digital industry.

Staff will also be able to develop their skills as part of the university centre’s continuous professional development (CPD) programme.

Sarah Marquez, Dean of Higher Education at University Centre Leeds, said: “We know the digital technology industry is rapidly growing and has become a key player in the global economy.

“By investing in digital infrastructure, we will be able to confidently equip our staff and students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the digital technology industry.

“The use of this equipment will lead to connections with industry professionals and other key stakeholders which will be invaluable.

“It will also help students to develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and creativity, which are all essential in a rapidly changing industry.

“As an organisation committed to sustainability, we’re pleased that the hub will contribute to our rich and diverse online learning environment.”
