Apartments plan for disused mansion house hit by suspected arson attack

Planners are considering proposals to convert a West Yorkshire mansion house and former nursing home into apartments.

The application is for St Ives Mansion, on the St Ives Estate in Harden, Bingley, which was badly damaged in a huge fire in March.

The Grade II listed building had been empty well before the fire, which police believe was started deliberately.

St Ives Mansion was last used as a 50-bed disability care home, but that shut in 2016 and the 25,000 sq ft property has since fallen into disuse. It was acquired by Vision Care in 2021.

Plans have been lodged to turn the property into 29 flats. The application notes there would be minimal changes to the listed building, with most of the work being internal.

Homes would include a mix of 15 one-bedroom apartments and 14 two-bedroom apartments.

The application statement explains: “The change of use does not affect the primary façade and retains the heritage of the building visually. All existing window and door openings are to be retained.

“The change-of-use proposal is of good design and certainly adds a positive contribution and significance back into the local character and distinctiveness of the St Ives area.”

The proposals add the changes would “create better visual improvements and appearance” to the building’s rear façade and the immediate area.

A decision on the application is expected to be made next month.
