Extensive refurbishment to begin on historic university property
The University of Huddersfield will carry out a revamp of its Ramsden Building, following granting of planning permission for a range of refurbishments to the Grade II Listed property.
The 140-year-old building, which faces onto Queensgate, will receive extensive work on its interior, which will reveal features hidden during alterations since it was opened as part of the Huddersfield Technical School and Mechanics’ Institute in 1884.
Air source heat pumps will replace the existing heating system, while old mechanical and electrical systems will be brought up to date in line with the university’s drive towards decarbonisation of its estate.
The central courtyard will be viewed once more with several old windows being revealed, while new roof lights will allow natural light into the space.
Removal of a floor will help to create a new event space with a large stained-glass window, while stud walls will also come out to open up former office spaces into communal areas.
Formerly the home of the School of Human and Health Sciences, including the Podiatry Clinic, all of which have moved to the new Daphne Steele Building, the Ramsden Building will house the International Study Centre, the International Office and the Graduate School.
Key partners in the design and planning of the refurbishment are GSSArchitecture, with the work expected to be completed in early 2026.

Also involved in the refurbishment will be: Henry Boot Construction; Gardiner and Theobald – Project Management and Cost Management; Buro Happold – Mechanical and Electrical Design; and Curtins – Structural.
