New star for former newspaper office

A RECRUITMENT agency has helped to breathe new life into a former Yorkshire newspaper's offices.

The Star's former premises in Sheffield is now the base for Sue Ross Recruitment, which provides office personnel.

The Sheffield-based company has moved into the property at 19-29 York Street following an extensive refurbishment programme, which included preservation of original Victorian features and an architectural redesign to create new office space.

Sue Ross, managing director of Sue Ross Recruitment, said: “When we were looking to relocate, our main objective was simply to find a building with more space for our expanding team, but we fell in love with the character of the former Star building straight away and it also ticked all the right boxes in terms of available space.

“It is a very intricate building, with a real Victorian feel and some fantastic architectural features. The interior was dilapidated and outdated when we decided to acquire it, but after an interior renovation, it is now finished to an extremely high standard and is ideal for our needs.

“Although the building has received a major interior renovation, the integrity of many of the original features have, where possible, been maintained, including original interior timber arches, bay windows, stone stairs, glazed brickwork and a stylish meeting room with an original roof light for the general office.

“The building was built in about 1840, and previous tenants include tailors, estate agents, stockbrokers, a theatrical agency, newspaper offices – and now a recruitment agency. It's a fantastic part of the city to be in and a great place to spend my working week.”

Property agency Knight Frank marketed the building.

Tim Botrill, partner at Knight Frank, said: “The combination of architectural style, quality office finishing, ideal space and city centre location made the York Street offices a very attractive prospect for businesses looking to relocate to the heart of the city.

“The eye-catching interior of this unique property is complemented by its traditional two storey brick and red sandstone building and pitched slate roof – I doubt you can find anything quite like it in the whole of Sheffield.”

There are two units still available to let on York Street, with 492 sq ft to 1,377 sq ft of office space to let.
