‘Key role’ for Clarence Dock as plans revealed

PROPOSALS for how Allied London plans to revitalise Clarence Dock in Leeds into a destination for start-up and creative businesses are to be unveiled.

Under the plans, Clarence Dock is to be rebranded as New Dock – the site’s original name from when it constructed in the nineteenth century.

As reported by TheBusinessDesk.com earlier this year, property company Allied London bought the 150-year head lease on the 1.2m sq ft Clarence Dock scheme from Lend Lease.

Clarence Dock, a mixed-use scheme, has struggled to attract footfall to its retail units following its opening in 2008.

When Allied London took over the lease, 28 out of 35 retail and restaurant units were vacant.

A report, set to be heard by Leeds City Council’s city centre plans panel today, says the site has a “key role” in contributing to the economic growth of the city south of the River Aire.

It also has a major part to play as a tourist and visitor attraction, the report said, and would complement plans for a city centre park. Clarence Dock is home to the Royal Armouries museum.

The report states: “Allied London are at an early stage in developing their proposals for future major investment to reinvigorate the Dock area. They will present their emerging strategy to promote New Dock as a destination for start-up digital and creative businesses, a place to live, and a place for leisure for residents, workers and visitors alike.”

Allied London’s proposals will look to “reconfigure” the existing set-up of the area to create a new “office hub”, as well as retail and restaurant opportunities.

There are also proposals for “floating” retail, food, drink and office premises.

The ‘pre-application’ will allow the Council’s panel members to comment on the proposals. No decisions will be made at the meeting.
