Anger at Nidd Vale following the calling in of administrators was one of the best read stories of 2012. Bank Santander subsequently defended the decision which led to the sale of the company’s Vauxhall dealership in Harrogate to Vertu.

This was a year dominated by moves in the legal services sector with a series of takeovers and mergers. It also saw the demise of Brooke North, one of the region’s oldest firms as it was hit by the economic downturn.

The flat property market was blamed for the decision to put the northern arm of architectural practice careyjones chapmantolcher into administration, another story among the best read of 2012.

Gaining attention for happier reasons, was the decision by Monarch to open a new base for scheduled services from Leeds Bradford Airport, creating hundreds of jobs – one of a series of positive developments at the airport this year.

The fallout from the Cattles affair continued to grab the headlines in 2012 with the news that three former directors had been fined and banned from financial services.

And in a year which saw a series of high profile retail administrations, the collapse of Azendi was the one that attracted most reads on TheBusinessDesk.com. Founder Ian Jones was subsequently able to rescue part of the business.
