Indian lawyers head to Yorkshire to talk trade

LAW firms from across the region will be gathering tomorrow for an event designed to strengthen links with the Indian legal sector.

The trade mission – organised by the Law Society’s International Division with a lunch hosted by Leeds Legal – will highlight what the region has to offer to inward investors as well as providing the opportunity to network with a wider group interested in doing business in India.

Delegates from around 20 Indian law firms will be attending the event, which is being held at The Hilton Hotel in Leeds.

In 2007, India overtook France to become the third largest investor in the UK.

Law firms have been encouraged to set up meetings to find Indian partners whom they can work with on deals in future and Yorkshire law firms of all sizes have signed up to participate.

Jeremy Shulman, chairman of Leeds law firm Shulmans, said: “While London has traditionally been the central platform for international work, this visit highlights the fact that Leeds is also on the international map. India is a key international sector for UK lawyers. So many British clients are now doing business there.”

Peter Wright of Nabarro in Sheffield said, “We are pleased to be welcoming so many Indian Lawyers to Leeds this week. This is an excellent opportunity for our firms establish closer links with Indian law firms and continue to facilitate even greater business between the UK and India in the future.”

The delegation will also visit Cambridge, Birmingham and London as part of the visit.
