Lifestyle: Sessions Spa

IT’S the perfect time of year to get your fix of spa trips. With relaxing, snug and quite often picturesque surroundings, the chilly winter months bring with them a great excuse to embrace this experience.
And, if you’re looking for a venue to head to, take a look at one of East Yorkshire’s most historic buildings, Sessions Spa.
Situated in the beautiful East Yorkshire market town of Beverley, the spa is steeped in history. Dating back to the 1800s, Sessions was previously the town’s crown court (where Dick Turpin was tried). Fast-forward two centuries and the charming building has been restored and redeveloped to its present glory – an elegant and classy spa, salon and beauty venue.
In 2012, a five-figure investment was pumped into the project, following a £1.8m investment previously, and today, Sessions, run by Jimi Parkinson and his wife Georgina, has more than 40 staff, with a successful hair salon and a wide range of beauty treatments also available on top of the relaxing spa experiences.
I popped along to the luxury spa with my partner Mark, a novice to spas who had no idea what to expect.
Luckily, I think it is fair to say he was immediately impressed. It did also help that we visited on a Tuesday, so it was fairly quiet, meaning often, we were the only ones occupying the space.
Once wrapped up in our fluffy dressing gowns (a spa day essential) we headed into the relaxation room, which was completely tranquil. Big plush sofas, teas and coffees, plenty of magazines and of course, the obligatory calming music.
There’s also a steam room if you fancy that.
After a bit of chill-out time, we were both taken through to one of the treatment rooms to experience the blissful back, face and scalp treatment with a hot stones massage. The facials were differently suited to each of our skin types.
It was an incredibly relaxing and therapeutic experience, the scalp part particularly so, and I would strongly recommend this.
The room itself was beautifully decorated and the staff at Sessions were all extremely polite and welcoming. We felt completely comfortable.
There’s an elegant and grand appearance to Sessions, so as well as the pleasant experience with the treatments, the beautiful 11,500 sq ft surroundings make it that bit more special.
Marble lines the walls and floors, Italian designer chandeliers hang from the ceiling and candlelit corridors create a warm and calming atmosphere. There’s lots of glass, stone and dark wood included in the decor too, to create an elegant look.
Overall, it was a lovely day out and if you do head over, next door is housed one of the town’s most popular restaurants, The Westwood.
