Next step for regen project with new supermarket

REMEDIAL work has begun on a new supermarket in Wolverhampton as part of a regeneration project in the city.

The last remaining details of the deal with Aldi for the 17,000 sq ft shop have been finalised meaning Birmingham-based developer St Modwen has now started the first stages of work on the project.

The single-storey shop, which will have 85 parking spaces, is expected to be open for business by April 2011.

The £150m regen project on the former Goodyear works site, close to Junction 2 of the M54, covers 88 acres of which 18 acres are occupied by Goodyear in a downsized facility.

Designed by Barton Willmore architects, the food store represents the first major element in the creation of a new urban community in Wolverhampton.

The proposals also include 21,000sq ft of neighbourhood retail facilities, 37 acres of new homes and 16 acres of landscaped public parkland.

Development surveyor for St. Modwen Peter Rudd said: “Agreeing a deal with Aldi to locate a landmark food store at the Goodyear redevelopment site is a major milestone for the regeneration scheme.

“The provision of conveniently located retail facilities is vital to the successful delivery of new mixed use communities, and we have taken a massive step forward in achieving this with Aldi committing to this new site in Wolverhampton.

“As an international operator, Aldi is a household name, and we are buoyed by the fact a company of this calibre has selected this site to build on its presence in the region.

“We are hopeful that the arrival of a new food store will now act as a catalyst for further redevelopment on site and beyond, promoting on-going growth and economic development across the city.”
