Lincs ice cream maker hits the road in 1970s van

Dairy farmers have got the wedding, gala and party scene licked, after hitting the road with an authentic 1970s ice-cream van.

It’s the latest move by the Scarborough family, of Daisy Made at Skellingthorpe, who decided to add a nostalgic touch to their business by splashing out on the original Morrison vehicle and revamp it to take to weddings, social gatherings and other special events.

And they called on Simon Balfe of Showcase Signs in North Hykeham – who has also been sprucing-up his own enterprise – to add the finishing touches to the vehicle’s bodywork, by supplying and applying some eyecatching signage.

The traditional ice-cream van, complete with wide serving hatch, now sports a fresh green and creamy livery and a quirky cow logo has been added to the sides and the “tail” of the van.

Daisy Made director Matt Scarborough said: “We’ve gradually developed our ice cream business over 25 years. Branching out from our dairy herd, we have our own ice cream factory, a café with an outdoor play area, and complete with our own ‘Crazy Daisy Golf’.

“We also have a own drive-thru facility, and we thought it would be great to have an original 1970s vintage ice cream van to take to a variety of events.

“After sourcing the vehicle, and bringing it back to Lincoln from the south of England, we had it renovated and had it repainted in Daisy Made colours, giving a nod to its original green-and-white livery. We have started offering to take it to weddings, proms and other public gatherings – and it seems to be going down a treat!,” said Matt.

Showcase Signs director Simon Balfe said: “One of the fun aspects of running a signage business is that you never know what you might get asked to do next. Creating and applying the words and logos for the Daisy Made van has been one of my quirkier jobs!

“I do work for a variety of businesses and organisations of all sizes, from higher education establishments to micro enterprises. Typically, a lot of work comes from businesses, which have a need for services like mine as they grow and diversify.

“It’s important to keep developing and changing your business to keep up with the times and people’s habits and preferences. My own industry is very competitive and the products and services that people are increasingly asking for has encouraged me to refresh my website and what I offer.

“I have created a new logo for Showcase Signs and added online ordering to my website, making it easier and simpler for people to buy some of the most popular products, such as banners and flags.

“It means I can easily serve a much wider market in search of these types of goods, whilst offering a personal service to businesses looking for a more bespoke service.”
