BT reveals plans to close 270 offices

How the new BT offices could look

Hundreds of jobs could be at risk in the East Midlands after BT announced plans to cut its office portfolio by 90%.

BT, which last May revealed it will cut 13,000 jobs over the next three jobs, says it will reduce its office estate from 300 to just 30.

BT employs around 550 employees in Leicester, around 340 in Lincoln and 280 in Nottingham. A spokesperson for the company told TheBusinessDesk.com:  “Today was just about announcing the first eight key locations of a UK-wide programme to improve BT Group’s workplaces. As it’s going to be a long programme (3-5 years), details about individual locations will take time to develop.”

Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Ipswich (Adastral Park), London and Manchester have been revealed as “key locations” for the company.

The move is part of BT’s ‘Better Workplace’ strategy. Though detailed plans of BT’s footprint in each location are still to be finalised, some existing BT buildings will be refurbished while others will see BT move into new offices.

“The Better Workplace Programme is about bringing our people together in brilliant spaces, and transforming the way we work,” said BT Group chief executive Philip Jansen.

“Revealing these eight locations is just the first step; we have dedicated teams working on identifying the best buildings to move into and which ones to redesign for the future. As a result of this programme, BT people will be housed in inspiring offices that are better for our business and better for our customers.”
