Council throws out plans for city centre mixed-use scheme

How the scheme would have looked

Plans to develop a mixed-use scheme in the heart of Nottingham have been thrown out by city planners.

Crowndale Properties had planned to demolish buildings on Thurland Street in the city and turn the upper floors into student accommodation while improving shop fronts on the ground floor.

The developer wanted to build 42 one-bedroom and studio apartments on the upper floor of the building.

An underground car park, which has been out of use for some time, would have also been also be brought back into use for residents.

However, the planning department at Nottingham City Council has said the scheme cannot go ahead.

In a statement, the Council said: “The proposed development would fail to provide a holistic and clearly defined development within a prominent part of the Old Market Square Conservation Area and adjacent to numerous Grade II listed buildings of fine architectural detail. By virtue of its inappropriate scale, mass and inappropriate architectural quality, particularly lacking in articulation, detail and clarity, the proposal would result in a development that would fail to enhance the character and appearance of the Old Market Square Conservation Area and would result in unacceptable harm to the setting of adjacent heritage assets.”

The upper floors of the building are currently used as a place of worship and associated hostel.
