Sports Direct appoints new auditor

Sports Direct’s long search for an auditor came to a close yesterday, as the retailer appointed RSM.

The move comes months after Grant Thornton quit its role with the Shirebrook firm, which was followed by the ‘Big Four’ – KPMG, PwC, Deloitte and EY – turning down the chance of working with Sports Direct after it was hit with a £624m tax demand from the Belgian government.

Jonathan Ericson, head of audit at RSM UK, said: “RSM is delighted to have won this opportunity. We have a strong, high quality audit practice. Our experience, investment and commitment, together with the scope and scale of our international services, mean we are ideally placed for this important public interest appointment.”
