East Midlands firms have a strong track record of handing opportunities to young people, and 2019 has seen a wide variety of companies continue to invest in the next generation.

Today we bring you news that Lincolnshire-based house builder Larkfleet Homes has recruited twelve new apprentices.

The new additions are all aiming to qualify either as bricklayers or carpenters.

They will work on building sites with the company’s contractors, including Belmont, Kestrel and Chris Morse, who will be paid by Larkfleet Homes to employ them.

The apprentices will also undertake formal training and study at a number of colleges in the region.

Builders’ merchant Travis Perkins has provided the apprentices with a “starter kit” of tools and equipment.

Larkfleet Homes’ chief executive Karl Hick said: “We are delighted to see these young people start their building industry careers with Larkfleet.

“The industry must invest in training and skills if it is to meet the needs of the future. Building is becoming increasingly complex and technical. We need a workforce that can operate confidently in this new environment.”

The firm’s apprenticeship programme is backed by the Construction Industry Training Board.

Meanwhile, over in Nottingham, two team members at Franklin Ellis Architects are celebrating qualifying as architects, having recently completed their studies and practical training.

James Damon and Josh Dobson will now assume positions as architects within the practice.

Franklin Ellis has been incredibly supportive – the company has a strong reputation for delivering award-winning projects and its ambition to create sustainable buildings that make a positive contribution to the local community. It’s great to be part of the team here.

“I have always been fascinated with the built environment and how architecture can enhance people’s lives and the communities they live in, so I’m looking forward to playing a key role in a wide range of projects.”

Dobson said: “I am proud to be part of the Franklin Ellis team and have the chance to work on such a varied portfolio of work that regularly develops and challenges different aspects of my expertise.

“I have always had an interest in art and architecture in particular, so it is fantastic to be able to pursue it as a career and work on wide-ranging design concepts across different sectors.”

Matthew Branton, senior partner at Franklin Ellis Architects, added: “We’re very pleased for James and Josh as they celebrate their qualifications and take on new roles within the practice. They each have great knowledge and enthusiasm and are highly valued members of the team.”
