Collin Street bridge to bite the dust

Nottingham City Council has submitted a variation on its original proposals for the new Broadmarsh bus station and car park which could see a much-maligned feature of the original structure consigned to the past.
The Council had originally proposed to rebuild the footbridge linking the upper floors of the car park with the main intu Broadmarsh centre as part of its regeneration plans for the city’s Southside.
However, should the revised plans be approved, the unsightly bridge across Collin Street (pictured above) will not be making a return – news which will no doubt be welcomed by the more traditional aesthetes across the city.
In March, new images were released showing Collin Street as a tree-lined space with views to the Castle preserved, places for people to sit and relax, space for art boxes and words in the paving – a nod to both the new Central Library and Nottingham’s status as a UNESCO City of Literature.
As part of the revised proposals, the Council also says it wants to relocate a high level media screen previously slated for Middle Hill to Collin Street.
Main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine began work on the £86 million transformation of the intu Broadmarsh centre in February this year.
