Hotel operator moves 161-room Nottingham venue a step closer

How the new hotel would look

Formal plans for the redevelopment of the huge Guildhall site in Nottingham city centre have gathered pace after Ascena Developments revealed a scoping request for a 161-bed hotel.

Ascena Developments wants to demolish large parts of the Guildhall building to construct a 13-storey hotel on the north-east of the site, as well as perform internal alterations.

Early details show that the hotel will include a bar, restaurant, spa and conference facilities.

Ascena will now look to submit a full planning application for the site. If the scheme gets the go-ahead, demolition will begin in May with building work starting in September and scheduled to take two years to complete. The developer says the scheme would create 130 jobs during construction and 120 roles when open.

Ascena owns and runs a number of luxury hotel and restaurant facilities in Birmingham and the south West, one of which is the Birmingham Michelin starred restaurant Opheem – which is run by Ascena business partner Aktar Islam. Aktar, who is a former winner of The Great British Menu and The F Word, will be running the rooftop restaurant.

The Guildhall site was last occupied by Nottingham City Council in 2010.
