More East Midlands areas to enter Tier 2 restrictions

A countywide ‘high’ COVID-19 local alert level – also known as Tier 2 – it set to come into force across Derbyshire.

The move will affect all Derbyshire residents, who are being urged to be aware of and abide by the new restrictions when they come in on Saturday 31 October 2020 to try to avoid the county being moved into a higher tier at a later date.

Tier 2 restrictions are currently in place as part of the Government’s alert system in four areas of the county in Erewash, Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Glossopdale in the High Peak.

And as the number of cases throughout Derbyshire continues to rise, Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock MP, announced today that all remaining areas of the county (Amber Valley, Bolsover, Derbyshire Dales, South Derbyshire and the remaining wards in the High Peak) will move from the tier 1 ‘medium’ alert and enter tier 2 from 12.01am on Saturday 31 October 2020.

The rate of infection across the county per 100,000 people is as follows:

Amber Valley – 265.2
Bolsover – 329.4
Chesterfield – 322.1
Derbyshire Dales – 162.6
Erewash – 306.5
High Peak (including Glossopdale) – 275.4
North East Derbyshire – 356.0
South Derbyshire – 323.5

Meanwhile, additional restrictions have also been announced for Charnwood in response to a continued high number of coronavirus cases in the borough.

From 00:01 on Saturday, October 31, Charnwood will be placed in the Tier 2 (high) Covid alert level category.

Under the new restrictions, people must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any setting – including homes, pubs and restaurants – unless they live with them or have formed a support bubble with them.

Latest data published by Leicestershire County Council shows Charnwood’s rate of 439 cases for every 100,000 people is significantly above the national average of 224 per 100,000.

Councillor Jonathan Morgan, leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said: “The rising number of cases in Charnwood means further restrictions are unavoidable and therefore it is imperative that we all act now to protect lives and livelihoods.

“I know the past few months have been tough for everyone and we have all made sacrifices to stop the virus but it is clear we need to do more.

“Please follow the guidance of hands, face and space. The key change under Tier 2 guidance is that you cannot mix indoors with people you don’t live with. This applies to your home, your friend’s home and public places like pubs and restaurants.

“Please follow the guidance, it is the only way to slow the spread.
