Student accommodation giant gets the nod to build 700-bed scheme

Student accommodation giant Unite has been given the go-ahead to build a huge site on Derby Road in the the Lenton area of Nottingham.

Designed by Broadway Malyan, the scheme, which will be next to the University of Nottingham’s Jubilee campus, will house 700 students across a 3-, 5- and 6-storey building, along with almost 20,000 sq ft of civic space, which will include collaboration spaces, reception and student welfare facilities; laundry, cycle stores and refuse storage.

The redevelopment will also retain the adjacent car dealerships on the site. Jaguar has a new purpose-built showroom elsewhere in the city so will move out of its site, allowing Toyota/Lexus to reappropriate that building.

A statement from ROK Planning said: “The development meets a strategically identified need in an appropriate and sustainable area, delivering well designed and high-quality student bedspaces and flexible commercial floorspace which will create jobs contribute to the economy, improve access to open space, and encourage sustainable forms of transport. The development will also be highly sustainable, energy efficient, and ecologically beneficial.”
