19th Century buildings to be turned into student flats

A developer has been given the g0-ahead to convert the upper floors of a Nottingham city centre building into 56 student flats and retail scheme.
Student Bid Co will redevelop 112-128 Derby Road in the city into a mixed-use scheme.
The buildings, some of the finest examples of their kind in the city, are in a triangular shape are Grade II listed and date from the late 19th Century. The buildings are vacant, apart from the ground floor of 116, which is a wine shop.
Planning documents from Paul Butler Associates say: “The proposed scheme will provide a series of benefits that will have a significant positive impact on the application site and surrounding area, including:
– Redevelopment of prominent and largely vacant Grade II listed buildings which are currently in poor condition with a high quality student accommodation development which will preserve their long-term sustainable future.
– Repair/restoration of the buildings and improving the character and appearance of the Canning Circus Conservation Area as well as the setting of nearby listed buildings. A series of other physical works are proposed to refurbish the buildings which are sensitive to the heritage significance of the buildings.
– Provision of student accommodation which will help meet demand in Nottingham.
– Securing direct investment into the local community through the provision of jobs during the development stage and spending in nearby facilities by future residents/ guests and employees.
– The encouragement of further investment into this part of Nottingham city.”
