John Lewis and Waitrose to cut 1,000 store management jobs

Department store John Lewis and its sister company, the supermarket chain Waitrose, are set to cut around 1,000 management roles in their stores.

The move comes as part of a drive by John Lewis Partnership to save around £300m a year by 2022. The firm has worked out that on average 2.7 people per John Lewis and Waitrose store will lose their jobs and that it hopes to minimise compulsory redundancies through options such as voluntary redundancy and voluntary severance.

The company also said that staff who do leave the business through redundancy will be offered outplacement support and access to its retraining fund. The retraining fund contributes up to £3,000 towards a recognised qualification or course for up to two years for any staff member with two years’ service or more.

A John Lewis Partnership spokesperson said: “We have announced to our Partners our intention to simplify our management structures in Waitrose and John Lewis stores, which will allow us to reinvest in what matters most to our customers.”
