People: Shakespeare Martineau; Canal Turn

Catherine Rustomji

Law firm Shakespeare Martineau, which has an office hub in Nottingham, has hired specialist partner Catherine Rustomji to head up its national charity team.

For more than 20 years, Rustomji has been exclusively advising charities, social enterprises and not for profit organisations – specialising in charity law and governance, not for profit legal structures, trustee training and board development.

She has joined Shakespeare Martineau after five years as a partner and charities practice head at Browne Jacobson. Prior to this, she worked at DWF, Hempsons, Dickinson Dees and Stone King, and was a charity trustee for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Over the years, she has supported national, regional and local charities, not for profit organisations, community groups, schools, colleges, churches, welfare and professional associations – operating across the health, education, arts, public and private sectors.

Rustomji said: “Shakespeare Martineau is a focused firm, which has a clear strategy for its people and itself, so I am delighted to be working at the core of a strong team to offer a complete service to our charities and not for profit clients.”

Ben Hicklin

Canal Turn, part of the Island Quarter regeneration scheme, has appointed Nottingham born Ben Hicklin to lead its events programme.

Hicklin joins the team as the head of events, where he’ll oversee the top-floor events space, Upstairs at Cleaver and Wake, and the outside plaza and bandstand, as well as the venue’s two restaurant offerings, Cleaver and Wake and Binks Yard.

He will work alongside Bistro Pierre founder John Whitehead, the project’s food and beverage director, and Gary Rudkin, the newly appointed head of operations, who has previously worked on impressive projects across Dubai and the UK.

Hicklin said: “I couldn’t be more pleased; this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m so proud to be a part of this exciting journey. I was born and raised in Nottingham, and care deeply about highlighting the talent from Nottingham’s creative arts community and the project’s overall success.

“I plan to deliver a diverse programme of events, which showcases people from a variety of backgrounds in a range of avenues – including comedy, music, and dance.”
