Plans to build nearly 300 homes on a former school site north of Nottingham city centre have been given the backing of council planning chiefs.

Countryside Properties submitted a proposal for a £35m development on the site of the former Padstow School, in Bestwood, last November. It was appointed by Nottingham City Council as the site’s developer in July.

Now, ahead of the council’s planning committee sitting next Wednesday (April 20), the scheme has been recommended for approval.

The school closed in 2000 and the buildings have since been demolished. The residential scheme at Bestwood Padstow would create 294 homes if approved, and one-quarter of the site would be affordable homes.

The plans would see 43 four-bed, 134 three-bed, 108 two-bed, and nine one-bed homes built – a reduction of around 50 homes on the original vision for the site.

In a statement, Countryside said: “The proposed development is locally responsive, to suit the site’s unique attributes with a vision to create a sustainable development which is specific to its setting.”
