A Solihull-based developer has submitted plans to create a 1.85m sq ft warehouse development at the Tata steelworks site in Corby.

WD (Westworks) is proposing to build a trio of big boxes at West Works, which would involve the demolition of 1.6m sq ft of existing industrial facilities at the tube making site.

The developer is seeking outline planning permission for the scheme, which has been designed by Newark-based UMC Architects, a specialist in industrial developments whose portfolio includes the SEGRO site at Kettering Gateway, LEDP3 in Leicester and Branston Locks in Burton.

The new warehouses would occupy a part of the steelworks that was once home to a British Steel plant.

Subject to approval by North Northamptonshire Council, the plans would see Tata’s landholding at Corby reduced by nearly 100 acres.

According to a statement submitted on behalf of the developer by JMW Planning Solutions, the existing buildings at West Works “are of poor quality and are coming to the end of their useful life.”

The statement adds that the redevelopment of the site would provide an opportunity to “make better use of land and resources, with energy-efficient buildings.”
