Flooding from Storm Babet to close A52 for ‘several days’

Flooding at Riverside Gardens in Derby

The A52 heading into Derby could be closed for several days following the flooding brought on by Storm Babet.

The council says it is “struggling” to reopen some of its major roads due to remaining flood water and that it is anticipating “really high levels” of disruption.

In Derby, Eastgate is closed on both sides to Pentagon due to flooding, while the Darwin loop also remain closed – and will be for several days.

The A52 inbound to the city will remain closed well into the week.

A statement from Derby City Council said: “Our teams have worked tirelessly overnight and are continuing to respond to aftereffects of the flooding.

“A number of roads are likely to remain closed for some time, as there is still a significant amount of flooding on a number of roads and underpasses as a result of the water levels we had yesterday.

“We’re aiming to reopen these as soon as possible. We need to remove large amounts of debris and check for damage to bridges and structures before roads can be reopened.

“Please do not move road closure signs. Do not drive through flood water. And be patient as we work our way through the city.”
