Record year for legal team with over £100m in damages recovered

The Nelsons personal injury team

A team of personal injury and medical negligence solicitors at East Midlands law firm Nelsons, has recovered £101.3m in damages for clients in the last 12 months to June 2023.

It marks the most successful year on record for the team of 21, which works across three offices based in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham.

Lisa Preece, partner, solicitor and head of the personal injury and medical negligence team, said: “Our focus continues to be on achieving justice for our clients who have been affected by often severe and complex injuries from accidents, or due to negligence by healthcare providers.

“We deal with claims that arise from a broad cross section of circumstances, ranging from relatively simple injuries, up to the most catastrophic cases where the impact has been life-changing and the damages awarded can be in seven figures.

“This achievement is a real milestone for our department, with each team member playing a crucial role in helping to compensate clients and supporting them to get their lives back on track.”

The past year saw the department cover several high-profile inquests arising out of negligence as well as supporting families who have been approached to take part in the Nottingham Maternity Review by Donna Ockenden.

These cases include women who have been refused a caesarean section or who have experienced traumatic deliveries resulting in harm to either baby or mother, or in some cases both. Many of these claims are very complex, requiring a specialist understanding in the area.

Carolle White has been heavily involved in some of these cases, and was this year promoted to legal director. The department has recently also welcomed solicitor, Hannah Manewell to the personal injury team.

Preece added: “We hit a record-breaking £25 million in damages for clients between May 2019 and May 2020 – to say we have now increased that figure four times over is testament to the hard work of everyone in the team and our commitment to clients. I’d like to say thank you to the whole department and I look forward to seeing what the next year brings for us.”

Stewart Vandermark, chief executive at Nelsons, said: “The personal injury and medical negligence team has had an outstanding year driven by their passion and dedication to clients. The specialist legal services we offer at Nelsons ensures we can empower clients dealing with some of the most complex situations, giving them a voice, helping them seek justice and to move forward. The success of Lisa and her team has been down to tremendous hard work and I congratulate them on their achievement.”
