Competition watchdog launches investigation into acquisition of timber merchant

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced an investigation into the anticipated acquisition of Lincolnshire-based Calders & Grandidge by Scanpole.
The CMA’s investigation will assess whether the merger creates a relevant merger situation under the Enterprise Act 2002 and if it is likely to significantly reduce competition.
Calders & Grandidge (Boston) is a timber merchant based in Boston, Lincolnshire, specialising in manufacturing timber utility poles for the communications and power industries.
Scanpole, on the other hand, produces wooden poles for electrical grids and lighting networks, as well as durable agricultural fencing posts.
The inquiry, officially launched on June 25, marks Phase 1 of the investigation. The deadline for a decision is August 20, subject to change based on the merger assessment process.
The CMA is inviting comments from interested parties to assist in this assessment, with a deadline for submitting comments being 10 July 2024.
