Serious traffic collision shuts A38

The A38 is closed in both directions this morning between the A50 (Derby) and the A5121 (Burton upon Trent) due to a serious traffic collision.

At around 1.30am reports were received of a serious traffic collision on the A38 southbound.

Staffordshire Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service responded immediately.

Shortly after arriving at the scene the decision was made to implement a full carriageway closure due to the serious nature of the incident.

To assist with Accident Investigation, the northbound carriageway has also been closed.

The emergency services continue to work at the scene with no current estimated times for re-opening.

Road users heading south are advised to follow the Solid Square diversion symbol on road signs.

  • At the junction of the A38/A50 Toyota Island, take the exit to the A50 Westbound.
  • Continue along the A50 westbound to it’s junction with the A511, Uttoxeter Road, Foston.
  • Take the exit to the A511 southbound and continue to it’s junction with the A5121, Derby Road, Burton-upon-Trent.
  • Take the exit to the A5121 northbound and continue to it’s junction with the A38, Clay Mills.

Road users travelling northbound are advised to follow the below diversion route:

  • Exit the A38 northbound at the Branston Junction, A5121.
  • Take the third exit to join the A5121 Parkway northbound towards Burton upon Trent.
  • Remain on the A5121 for 2.3 miles until you reach the junction with the A511.
  • Turn left onto the A511 for 6 miles until you reach the A50, Foston Hatton Bypass.
  • Turn right to join the A50 eastbound for 5.5 miles until the A38/ A50 Toyota Island.
  • Exit the A50 and take the first exit to join the A38 northbound towards Derby/ M1.

A statement from National Highways said: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
