Cineworld to close more Midlands cinemas in restructuring shake-up
Cineworld is set to close more of its Midlands locations as part of its ongoing restructuring programme.
The cinema company is set to close six more cinemas, bringing the total number of sites shut down to 11.
The closures will include branches in Northampton, Castleford, Leigh, Middlesbrough, Poole and Weymouth, with the Weymouth location closing on 30 December and the others on 19 January.
Earlier this year, the cinema chain shut sites in Loughborough, Yate, Swindon Regent Circus and Glasgow Parkhead as part of the same restructuring efforts.
While Cineworld had planned to close its Hinckley branch as well, this site has been spared following the approval of a new property deal.
Following these closures, Cineworld will have 90 cinemas left across the UK.
The company’s restructuring plan, which involved significant rent cuts for many of its locations, was approved in court earlier this year despite opposition from some landlords.
As part of its recovery strategy, Cineworld secured additional funding, including £40m in liquidity, and plans to invest around £35m into refurbishing its remaining cinemas.
