Two men sentenced for role in illegal waste site near Newark

Long Bennington waste site

Two men have been sentenced for their role in operating an illegal waste site near Newark, bringing the total number of convictions in the case to 11.

Marc Greenfield (46) and James Baggaley (39) were sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on December 16.

Both received 19 and 20 months in prison, respectively, but their sentences were suspended for 18 months.

They were also ordered to remove waste from their land by September 2025, at an estimated cost of £2.5m.

The illegal waste site, located on Fen Lane, Long Bennington, was discovered after an investigation by the Environment Agency named Operation Lord.

It was revealed that large quantities of waste, including shredded material, were dumped, burned and buried on the site.

The activity intensified during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, prompting a raid in April 2020.

Officers seized an excavator and a lorry, depositing more waste at the time.

The court found that Greenfield and Baggaley deliberately misled residents and authorities while causing harm to the local environment.

The site was described as a “smoking wasteland,” with toxic fumes putting nearby residents at risk.

It follows earlier convictions in the case, including the Canner family, who ran the site, with total sentences for those involved now adding up to 14 years.

The investigation continues, with Environment Agency officers working with local police and councils to address illegal waste operations
