Waitrose eyes Derby move

Premium supermarket chain Waitrose has expressed continued interest in Derby as the brand confirmed it is reviewing site options for a new store in Derby.

The move comes just days after Waitrose said it may put on hold its proposed new store at Wheatcroft Island just outside Nottingham.

A spokesperson for Waitrose said: “We have wanted to open in Derby for some time and we are currently reviewing our options.”

John Forkin, managing director of Marketing Derby, said: “We have been working with Waitrose for some time selling the concept of a major store in Derby and feel confident this will progress once the appropriate site is found.”

Whilst Waitrose is typically regarded as being an upmarket brand, the company has made strides in recent years to remain competitive with the likes of Tesco by price-matching 7,000 items back in 2012.

A move into the city would bring a number of jobs and broaden the range of supermarket choices available to Derby residents.
