On the move: the latest East Midlands hires

David Cureton

Nottingham’s NG Chartered Surveyors has appointed David Cureton as a consultant specialising in business rates appeals and rates audit as the firm expands its professional department.

Cureton has more than 30 years’ experience in the property industry and will bolster the firm’s offering ahead of the impending business rates revaluation in April 2017.

Starting as a trainee estate agent, Cureton has helped major occupiers such as Argos, Bristol Street Motors, Halfords, Homebase, H Samuel, Natwest, Lloyds Banking Group and Trent Buses to reduce their rate bills by millions of pounds.

Previous roles include head of rating at Johnson Fellows and team leader of BNP Paribas’ Birmingham rating department and at King Sturge (now JLL) in Nottingham.

Director Richard Sutton said: “As ratepayers look for savings in order to survive and thrive, reducing the business rates burden for businesses not only saves jobs but can help secure the future of entire companies. With David onboard, we aim to grow and develop the department further in preparation for the business rates revaluation in 2017. We are proud to have someone of David’s pedigree join the NG team”

Cureton said: “NG is a niche, specialist practice, with a wealth of experience and a strong, reputable client base. I am delighted to join the team, many of whom I have known for over 15 years and I am looking forward to growing the department and continuing to help clients make substantial savings on their business rates.

“The rating system is not conducive to being easily understood by many ratepayers and the system is currently being overhauled again with the introduction of “Check, Challenge, Appeal” in respect of appeals initiated for the 2017 rating revaluation. There are a number of measures out there to assist building owners to minimise their liability with respect to empty rates and we’re here to help.”

Interns ImagePKF Cooper Parry has welcomed another 10 interns across the Midlands.

The East Midlands team is set to welcome Samantha Galligan, Charlotte Taylor, Matthew Holmes, Kassim Yasin, Rachael McQuaid, Amardeep Atwal and Revekka Katsounotou.

Placements in the East Midlands will consist of three month rotations across the restructuring and wealth teams, tax and audit teams. Two six month placements have also been made available in the tax and audit teams. Interns will also spend a short time working in the firm’s support teams, notably HR, marketing and internal finance.

Ade Cheatham, CEO at PKF Cooper Parry said: “Last year’s interns were a hugely talented group who worked really hard during their time with us, resulting in eight of them being offered full-time roles in our East and West Midlands offices.

“There has been an unprecedented level of interest in this year’s scheme, with a lot of competition from across the region. We have seen some strong talent coming through the assessment stages and look forward to working with our new recruits to help develop their potential.”
