Work starts on Newark extra care facility
A development that will provide ousing for older people in Newark has started on site following a ground-breaking ceremony.
The scheme, in Bowbridge Road, will include 60 purpose-built units over three levels, including 40 extra care apartments. Facilities will also include communal areas, rooms designated for activities, a sensory garden and a commercial kitchen.
Newark and Sherwood District Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Newark and Sherwood Homes are working in partnership to deliver the flagship development.
Councillor Bruce Laughton, chair of Homes and Communities Committee, Newark and Sherwood District Council said: “The council has ambitious housing growth plans to deliver new affordable housing to meet the needs of residents across the district. The scheme at Bowbridge Road is part of this, being delivered in partnership with the county council, Newark and Sherwood Homes, the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) and supported by Newark’s MP Robert Jenrick. The council sees this as a flagship project that will deliver a state of the art housing scheme for older persons to both meet their housing and support needs.”
Newark and Sherwood Homes’ vice chairman of the board, Michael Frettsome said: “Thanks to significant funding from both councils and funds from the Homes and Communities Agency we have been able to support this project, which is hugely important in that it will deliver high quality accommodation for older people in the community who require support and care in their homes.
“We are delighted to be working with Newark and Sherwood District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council to deliver this project; it will be an asset to the local community and support older people with care needs.”
The ground-breaking ceremony celebrated the laying of the first brick and marked the project’s official start on site by contractor Henry Boot Construction.
The scheme is the result of a successful bid for £1.5m of funding from the Department of Health’s Extra Care and Support Programme, administered by the HCA, and funding from both councils.
