95 houses to be built on former Islamic school site

The site of a former Islamic Institute is set to be transformed into 95 houses after the owners of the land received planning consent after a lengthy battle with local residents.

Rushcliffe Borough Council has given the go-ahead for the residential scheme to be built on land owned by the Madni Trust in Flintham, near Newark.

However, the Council has attached a raft of conditions to the outline planning consent – ranging from badger protection to the type and quality of materials used on the houses.

The site has a long and complicated history. In late 2013, the Rushcliffe Borough Council dropped legal proceedings it has brough against The trust to make the site safe or demolish the buildings.

The case was deferred to allow the Trust to improve the measures in place to prevent public access to the site.

The Islamic Institute, a school which closed in 2007, was in the former RAF Syerston officers’ mess on a case that closed in 1970.

The school opened in 1994. It was supported by private money and had a board of trustees who sold the school to the Madni Trust to ensure that the investors could recoup their cash.

The Section 106 agreement involved in the planning consent includes a near-£600,000 contribution to local primary and secondary schools, the provision of affordable housing and an £82,960 donation to East Bridgford Medical Practice.
