Designer Arup culls over 650 jobs

INTERNATIONAL engineering and design company Arup has confirmed that over 650 jobs have been axed at the business.

The company, which has an operation on Blythe Valley Park in Solihull, made the announcement following a consultation period with staff which ended last month.

The figures equate to around 15% of the UK payroll.

Nearly 300 of the jobs came from permanent staff, a further 230 agency and temporary contracts were terminated and 86 people who have left the business and have gone unreplaced.

In addition, 70 jobs based in the UK have been transferred overseas.

Arup has offices throughout the country including in Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds as well as bases in countries as diverse as Vietnam, Serbia and the UAE.

A company statement said: “280 permanent roles are being made redundant, a much lower figure than anticipated, and 230 temporary and agency contracts have been ended.

“Eighty-six people who have left the firm have not been replaced.

“Importantly, we have also been successful in finding roles for over 70 individuals within Arup’s operations elsewhere around the world.

“International mobility is important to us as a firm, and this reflects our desire to promote mobility even during the most challenging of times.”

A company spokeswoman said it could not provide a precise geographical breakdown of where the jobs had been lost across the UK.
