Plans to transform soon to be vacant city hospital site unveiled

Plans have been unveiled to create housing on land that is set to be vacated at the City Hospital West site in Birmingham.

Many of the services at the City Hospital will be transferred to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital opening in spring 2024, leaving a large portion of the site surplus to the NHS’ needs.

Homes England, the Government’s housing and regeneration agency, is preparing an outline planning application to regenerate the surplus land.

The proposals would deliver up to 825 homes and apartments.

Located on the edge of the City Centre and in proximity to the Jewellery Quarter, the site will be within walking distance of the nearest tram station at Soho/Winson Green and surrounded by a network of bus stops.

Residents will benefit from improvements to bus, cycle and pedestrian links that will be delivered on completion of the Dudley Road Improvement Scheme.

A public consultation on the plans has launched today.

Abby Brough, head of planning and enabling at Homes England, said: “Homes England are working closely with partners and local stakeholders to develop a masterplan which benefits the existing community and respects the history of this site.

“City Hospital West is entering a new era, and our aim is to ensure that the site continues to play an active role in the local community for generations to come. We are inviting members of the community to have their say on the plans and help us shape the future of this important space.”

A public exhibition event has been scheduled for members of the community to view the plans, ask questions to members of the project team, and provide their feedback. The event is being held on 19th July, 3pm – 7pm, at Aberdeen Street Church of God of Prophecy (B18 7DL).
