Property professionals invited to RICS event

PROPERTY professionals from the West Midlands have been invited to attend a special event focusing on current issues affecting the sector.

The RICS West Property CPD Day will have a number of eminent speakers giving their expert opinions on a wide range of key property issues, including those surrounding landlord and tenant, party walls and boundary disputes.

Caroline Priest and Paul Daniels, of Withy King Solicitors will discuss the effect on parties in a landlord and tenant relationship in the event of insolvency on behalf of one party or another; and provide an interpretation of the effect of various break clauses and subletting provisions in leases respectively.

Later in the day, their colleague Mike Hansom, a property litigation specialist, will review the role of the surveyor as an expert witness in boundary disputes. He will also suggest the best approach to take in considering the evidence commonly available, and the ever increasing emphasis on mediation and other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

David Stubbs, senior director with BNP Paribas Real Estate will deliver a refresher on key provisions of the Red Book. This will include a summary on the latest amendments and address the problems of valuing in a volatile market.

David Dalby, RICS director of residential professional group, will conclude the presentations and discuss the role of the Blue Book in raising awareness of standards in the sector, future developments, and implications for the wider home-buying and selling debate.

He will also review the HomeBuyer Report, looking at the issues arising from the new format, strategies for greater take-up and promotion and the future of condition reporting in the home-buying process generally.

Matthew McKaig, operations director RICS West, said: “By attending this event, local commercial and residential property professionals will have direct access to leading specialists within this key sector at a time when political and economical change is prevalent.

“With presentations covering a diverse range of subject areas from a banker’s view of the commercial property market right through to specific residential topics including boundary disputes and party walls, we anticipate that there will be something to interest everyone.”

The event will take place at the Barceló Cheltenham Park Hotel in Cheltenham on Tuesday May 11.
