Coffee chain set to ring the changes at former mobile phone shop

A FORMER mobile phone shop in Birmingham city centre is set for conversion to a new coffee shop.

Starbucks plans to take over the former Carphone Warehouse shop on the corner of Cannon Street and Cherry Street, opposite the entrance to the House of Fraser department store.

It has lodged a change of use application with Birmingham City Council and proposes the complete refurbishment of the ground floor, basement and lower basement areas.

It has also applied for permission to introduce an outdoor seating area at the popular location, which is a main walkway between the business district and the city centre.

The coffee business has also applied for listed building consent for the work.

The shop forms part of 10 Cherry Street, which was built in 1881-82 in an Arts and Crafts-style by J L Ball and was his first independent work.
