Residential plan for former Kimberley Ales brewery yard

A former Nottinghamshire brewery yard could come back to life after a planning application was lodged to turn it into luxury homes.

The Hardy & Hansons brewery yard in Kimberley was for years responsible for brewing what became known as Kimberley Ale.

Now, Brick Craft Developments wants to turn the derelict yard into nine homes.

The former Hanson’s Brewery was created by Stephen Hanson in 1847, located in Hanson’s Yard with a red brick and stone building of 490 square yards.

The brewery was a success and between 1869 and 1872 increased production under the leadership of Hanson’s son Robert. A four-storey brewery tower was constructed with loading out rooms, malt and hop stores, stables for 10 horses and a fermenting house 90 feet long with 15 stone squares each to hold 25 barrels.

During the latter half of the 20th Century the brewery struggled. The entire site was purchased by Greene King in 2006 and closed down.

A heritage statement in support of the planning application says: “The redevelopment of the yard on a comprehensive basis rather than piecemeal will carry on the redevelopment of the local area that recently had Critchs Yard, Midland Train Station and the Brewery Annex on Browns Flats passed for residential conversion. These are purpose built industrial buildings, whilst erected over a period of 70 years can be converted to residential to retain the integrity of the former brewery yard.”

If the application is approved, Brick Craft Developments will build seven 3-bedroom, one 2-bedroom and one 4-bedroom houses.
