Passenger numbers rise at East Midlands Airport
East Midlands Airport has reported a 4.9% increase in people travelling during 2016/17 when compared to the previous year.
Throughout the 12 month period, 4.7 million passengers travelled through the, 221,084 more than the previous year.
The airport says it has experienced 15 months of consecutive growth and is expecting this increase to continue throughout the summer months with an additional 123,464 people already booked to travel. This represents a 3.81% rise on summer 2016 and will be the airport’s busiest summer on record.
This summer the airport will provide new connections to Budapest and Reus with Ryanair, Split and Almeria with Jet2.com and Girona, Naples with both Ryanair and Jet2.com. April passenger figures represent almost 7% growth on the same month last year, with 406,505 choosing to travel from East Midlands Airport.
Andy Cliffe, managing director East Midlands Airport, said: “Maintaining growth throughout the year, even though we had periods of closure due to our successful runway refurbishment programme, is very encouraging. We have seen strong month on month growth throughout last year, resulting in us having the best summer season since the recession in 2008. With new routes and opportunities for travel, we are developing our destination portfolio with each coming season.
“In the first few weeks of the summer season, which included the Easter holiday, we have seen increases in people travelling though our airport. Our newly refurbished shops, bars and restaurants have has a great response from customers and we cannot wait to welcome even more people through ours doors as the summer really kicks in.”
