Soubry calls on May to resign

Theresa May

Anna Soubry, the Tory Broxtowe MP, has called on Prime Minister Theresa May to resign after a night of trauma for the Conservatives.

As the country headed towards as hung Parliament, Soubry’s majority was slashed to less than 1,000.

Speaking to the BBC, Soubry said: “It is bad. It is a matter for her [whether she resigns]. She is in a very difficult place. She’s a remarkable and very talented woman and she doesn’t shy from difficult decisions. But she now has to, obviously, consider her position. Theresa did put her mark on this campaign. She takes responsibility, as she always does and I know she will, for the running of the campaign. It was a tightly knit group. And it was her group that ran this campaign.”

Broxtowe’s UKIP vote collapse, with Labour being the main beneficiary. In the end, Soubry’s majority was cut to just 863 votes.

Meanwhile, last night’s General Election result hasn’t gone down well with the East Midlands business community.

The managing director of £116m turnover logistics business Europa Worldwide Group, Andrew Baxter – a firm supporter of both Brexit and the Conservative party – said: “This result is a disaster. Theresa May’s position now looks very vulnerable indeed and I expect she will go in the near future – maybe as soon as in the next week – because she will struggle to have the authority to lead the party through the coming period.

“This will be worsened by people blaming her for putting the party and country in this position by calling the election. I suspect that there will be another general election within the next year, perhaps in October or November. However, I think this would be dangerous or the Conservatives as there is zero appetite for another election.

“I doubt the Conservatives will be able to push through Brexit without a majority so therefore the nature of Brexit – or in fact whether it happens at all – will depend, if I’m right, upon the result of the next election.

“The upshot of this election in my opinion is total instability and a very unclear picture for the future of the UK.”

Steve Digva from In Phase International said: “While sitting and watching the commentary on Channel 4 my stomach would turn every time it was mentioned Labour winning another seat.

“I recall the financial mess that Labour left us in an almost bankrupt economy. Labour have always been focused on delivering what the people want however that is not always what they need.

“Margaret Thatcher was in my opinion the best Conservative leader during my lifetime, she suffered one downfall, Poll Tax, while fair in principle not fair to those who could not afford it. Blair following USA into war and costing us billions of pounds which staved our economy and ran us in to the debt we are paying today.

“Let’s look at the current position; while I don’t feel May has what it really takes to lead the Conservative Party and her party is one of the weakest during my history I still have faith that only the Conservatives can provide a stable economy and investment back into the UK, during the event I was convinced the Labour would win, I am pleased to see Conservatives won. However we enter even more uncertainty with a hung Parliament. So now we are found wondering the streets lost and confused once more.”
