Derby entrepreneur set to take baby bottles business global

Kavita Oberoi OBE and Daniel Sutherland

A Derby entrepreneur has invested in a new baby bottles business after meeting the inventor on a TV programme.

Kavita Oberoi OBE has put money into Daniel Sutherland’s Quilk business after meeting her on the set of Sky TV series Make Me a Millionaire Inventor. The new firm will be called Oberoi Sutherland, and the pair have plans to take the business global.

Having been unable to find an available product to help safeguard his own children from the health risks associated with bottle feeding, Sutherland, from Aberdeen, designed an innovative baby bottle that accelerates the cooling of baby formula allowing parents to safely make feeds on demand. Sutherland says the accelerated cooling leads to a reduction in harmful bacteria, which can cause bacterial infection.

Having considered manufacturing the bottles in China, Sutherland and Oberoi were keen to keep the manufacturing of Quilk in the UK and have appointed a manufacturer in Derby.

Sutherland said: “After struggling to find and then follow information on best practice surrounding the preparation of baby feeds when my own children were bottle feeding, I’m excited to be bringing Quilk to market.

“Formula presents a real danger to infants when it’s not prepared correctly, and this is an issue very well understood by the industry. Although we are advised by our healthcare professionals on this issue, until now it has just been too difficult and time consuming to make feeds safely on demand. Quilk offers a simple, credible and genuinely useful solution to this issue. With this feeding bottle, you can quickly make a fresh feed when you need it, in the knowledge that you are following guidelines to prepare infant formula in the safest way possible. Simple, easy, safe.”

Kavita Oberoi OBE added: “I was immediately drawn to the product and to Daniel as an individual. I knew right at the start of his pitch on the programme, that this would be the right opportunity for me to invest.

“Daniel was extremely passionate about the concept he had created, and when I quickly understood the many benefits it presented to parents, I knew that by working together we could make Quilk hugely successful.

“Investing and helping Daniel to develop the product was an easy decision for me to make, and I’m very much looking forward to taking Quilk to market.”
