Fresh lockdown restrictions imposed across parts of the Midlands

Fresh lockdown restrictions have come into force in parts of the Midlands in an attempt by the Government to halt the rise in coronavirus cases.

Wolverhampton and Oadby and Wigston in Leicester are subject to the new restrictions, which have been confirmed by the Department for Health following consultation with local leaders.

In Wolverhampton and Oadby and Wigston, people will be barred from Tuesday September 22 from socialising with other people outside their own households or support bubbles in private homes and gardens.

People will be allowed to continue to travel to work and children will remain in school, said the Government.

The news comes as there were an estimated 6,000 new infections a day were recorded in England from 4 to 10 September.

Rick Blackmore, CBI East Midlands director, said: “Businesses in the East Midlands know public health must come first and have been doing all they can to keep staff and customers safe, whether it’s pubs, shops, factories or offices.

“This news will come as a bitter disappointment for many businesses across the East Midlands, but the Government cannot stand by as infection rates rise in the region.

“Taking action now can help to maintain confidence and avoid further restrictions on businesses and households in the months ahead.

“With the number of new local restrictions on the rise, the Government will need to take an urgent look at the business support packages for the autumn, including a successor to the furlough scheme.”
