Plans revealed for new eco-homes scheme close to Nottingham city centre

How the new scheme could look

Plans to demolish school buildings in the Mapperley area of Nottingham and build 66 homes have been revealed.

Blueprint is behind the plans to transform the former Elms Primary School on Cranmer Street, which has been derelict since 2008.

The scheme, called The Elms, would be made up of five 1-bedroom, eight 2-bedroom and 53 three-bedroom homes, designed by Sarah Wigglesworth Architects of London.

A planning statement with the application reads: “The Elms will be a distinctive, low-carbon, garden neighbourhood that recognises Nottingham’s past and which thrives into the future.

“The Elms will be constructed and inhabited in ways which promote our environmental well-being, supporting an holistic approach to sustainable living. The development blurs the boundaries between living, working, play and nature, aiming to foster an engaged and healthy community.

“The design and specification will be carbon-responsible with homes that are comfortable and green, inside and out. It will be a distinctive place which promotes positive well-being by providing accessible spaces within a supportive community.

The Elms will be a garden city neighbourhood of the 21st Century, addressing different needs and wants to create a diverse and connected community close to the heart of Nottingham’s centre.”
