Top 10 stories of 2022: Number 6 – Covid-related downturn spells the end for car dealership

In the run-up to the Christmas break, we’ll be looking back over 2022 to rediscover our top 10 most popular stories of the year.

Numbers 10-7 in the countdown involved a troubled high street retail giant, the failure of Nottingham Castle Trust, a jailed (but ultimately exonerated) publican and the erstwhile boss of Norton Motorcycles.

Our sixth best-read story of the year is a sad one – and the kind of tale which, regrettably, is becoming all too familiar.

In February, Joanne Hammond and Kris Wigfield of Begbies Traynor were appointed as joint administrators to Derby-based new and used car retailer Holt Cars.

The firm sadly went under, citing a Covid-related downturn in trade and the withdrawal of UK Mitsubishi sales, which resulted in a “significantly lower” number of new cars available for sale than forecast.

12 jobs were lost, the administrators set to work realising the company’s assets and Holt’s base at 998 London Road in Alvaston was put up for sale.

According to an administrators’ update filed with Companies House back in August, the property was sold for £825,000.

It would appear that circumstances beyond the company’s control ultimately led to its downfall, and one can only hope the owners and affected staff have been able to move on.
