Plans revealed for new student flats in Hockley

How Hockley Place will look

Plans have been revealed for a new student accommodation scheme in the Hockley area of Nottingham.

Hockley Nottingham Limited has submitted plans to create nine cluster flats and 17 self-contained studios at buildings on the corner of Lennox Street and Lower Parliament Street.

If given the go-ahead by Nottingham City Council, the scheme will be called Hockley Place.

The site is currently made up of three buildings facing Lennox Street and have either been vacant or under-used for a number of years, according to a planning statement accompanying the application, which says they are neither “active or attractive on the street scene”.

The proposal outlines plans for an upward extension of the properties to add two new floors and convert the existing space into student accommodation to create a 49-bedroom scheme.

The statement adds: “The proposed renovation and extension have been designed with careful consideration for the existing and surrounding buildings along Cranbrook Road and Lower Parliament Street.

The existing buildings were constructed at different times and consequently the general storey heights and roof lines vary with each property. The proposal celebrates this and instead of hiding it behind a coherent facade, it proposes three separate volumes each carefully design to be corresponding to the existing host building’s mass, materiality and proportions.

“The existing façade will be restored and retained while the new floors will be clad in complimenting aluminium, in keeping with the warehouse feel of the site while also providing more contemporary residential fenestration, including Juliet balconies.”

The plans have been designed by Debtal Architecture.
