Accountancy giant selects new leader for the Midlands

Matt Buckingham

Business and financial adviser Grant Thornton has appointed Matt Buckingham as its new practice lead for Birmingham and Leicester.

Buckingham will be responsible for directing and growing Grant Thornton’s regional team of almost 600 people across the two offices.

He joined the firm in 2019 as an audit partner and has since become head of commercial audit in the Birmingham office, a responsibility he will retain.

With nearly thirty years of experience, he has developed strength in working with private SMEs and smaller public limited companies across the East and West Midlands and also has experience in supporting exporting clients and international companies that have a presence in the region.

James Brown and Sue Knight, who previously fulfilled the leadership role, are moving to focus on other responsibilities within the firm’s UK regional business and private client team.

Buckingham said:I am proud and excited to be the new practice lead and looking forward to working with more of the fantastic businesses we have in the region. Whilst there are undoubted economic headwinds, I believe that the inspiring companies across Birmingham, Leicester and the wider Midlands are well placed to combat these and fulfil their vast potential. Indeed, data from our most recent Business Outlook Tracker shows the companies themselves share this opinion, showing that 75% of business leaders across the Midlands are optimistic about revenue growth.

“There are many reasons to support this optimism. With the creation of East and West Midlands Investment Zones on the horizon as well as the opportunities afforded by the East Midlands devolution deal, the landscape for firms looking to scale up and prosper is very exciting. It will be a privilege to continue to support these firms on their journeys in the years to come using the vast capability, insight and experience within our two Midlands offices.”
